My First Upload to IMSLP

Benefits of playing an instrument whose popularity is declining? If you have connections to a local organ society, such as the RCCO, you’ll likely meet people with large collections of sheet music. Some of them can no longer keep all those books, and are happy to give them to some young person who will use them. It’s an excellent opportunity for an eager young musician to easily acquire a lot of free or nearly free sheet music.

Home Recording Setup

I started making videos of myself playing the organ and now I can practice longer and faster without my wrists hurting.
Setup A first version of this setup is in an Instagram post.
This is what I use to make home recordings of organ music.
To me, one of the most important requirements is convenience, otherwise I don’t make recordings very often.
From the headphone jack on the organ, I split between headphones (for monitoring) and an audio cable to my phone.

Marcel Dupré's House

A few weeks ago, I visited the house where Marcel Dupré lived in Meudon, in the suburbs of Paris. It was open for a tour for Journées du Patrimoine.
Plaque by the road: “From 1925 to 1971, the composer Marcel Dupré, organist at St. Sulpice, lived here.”
His house has an organ in it. The organ originally belonged to Alexandre Guilmant, whose house used to be a little ways down the road from this one.

Salvaging a Reputation

Motivation This fictional story is inspired by a question. “If pornography use is as rampant in the church as all the numbers indicate, then what does it look like to confront this evil?” I personally took a long time to believe the numbers. They’re shocking, and I’m still processing how to respond.
While they are still well below their peers who are not practicing Christians in frequency of porn use, four in 10 [practicing Christian males aged 13-24] are actively seeking [pornography] out at least once or twice a month.

Ravi Zacharias and the Survivor Blogs

March - May 2020 I hear news that Ravi Zacharias has cancer, and is dying. I once read a few articles on his site, and probably watched a few videos, but it must not have meant much to me, because I haven’t followed him closely. I have, however, been reading survivor blogs, and I know that his name comes up there. That’s not a good sign.
RZIM starts a campaign, #ThankYouRavi, and the posts start filling my Facebook feed.

Abortion as Honour Killing

A Conversation “What do you think about abortion?” I ask. A young man stops, and says that it is always wrong. His religion says so.
A while later, he comes back, and is not so sure. He has thought about it, and he gives me a situation when abortion would make sense. A unmarried young woman gets pregnant. She has brought shame on the family. Abortion would make the problem go away.

FFmpeg cheatsheet

My personal list of frequently used FFmpeg commands. See the FFmpeg documentation for more examples and detailed explanations.
I find FFmpeg convenient for simple tasks, but for more complicated projects, I prefer Kdenlive, OpenShot, or the Samsung Video Editor.
Trim Trim input.mp4 so that output.mp4 starts at 13.5 seconds and ends at 1 minute:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:13.5 -i input.mp4 -t 00:00:46.5 -c copy output.mp4 This runs quickly because -c copy says not to re-encode anything.

Software I Use and Like Android Audio Recorder: The settings include an option for unprocessed audio, which is useful for recording music without automatic gain control messing up the volume. AntennaPod: The Open Podcast Player Decap CMS: Content management for Git workflows, works with any static site generator. I enjoyed trying a Hugo template for Decap CMS to make a statically generated site with content that non-technical people can easily edit.
